I couldn't care less which side the filler is; as long as I'm not in a car where the hose physically can't reach round to the filler I'll drive to whichever pump is available and fill up from whichever side of the pump is available. It saves time queuing when there are empty pumps sitting there and the masses are waiting for 'the right side', but as I've never in almost 40 years of driving had a car where the hose wouldn't easily reach the other side, it's never occurred to me not to, not until wife mentioned how she'd also bypassed a long queue to do what she normally does and we thought it odd that so many people would rather wait than fill from the other side.
